Big Cottonwood Park Master Plan
Landmark Design began work on the Big Cottonwood Parks Master Plan in early 2009. The plan was commissioned in response to conflicting public ideas concerning the preservation, management and use of the four individual park sites that compose the Big Cottonwood Park system.
The Big Cottonwood Parks Master Plan provides a conceptual framework for guiding preservation of open space and improvement of more formal park uses over a long-term implementation and funding period. Utilizing a thorough and extensive public involvement process, the plan is based on the development of distinctly different design alternatives, which were then reviewed by the public to help identify a preferred plan. The master plan reflects the most compelling needs of the four parks, which concern the preservation of existing open space and the desire to preserve natural areas. The final plan embraces re-establishment of degraded natural sites through a process of preservation and re-vegetation of natural areas, the curtailment of horse riding, and the discontinuation of inappropriate uses such as off-leash dog walking.
The Big Cottonwood Parks Master Plan represents the first step toward the eventual upgrading the park environment. The plan establishes the goals and desires established by both the Steering Committee and members of the public, and it reflects the realities of re-building the park system. The plan provides a holistic approach for organizing the many steps that will eventually establish Big Cottonwood Park as a place of balanced use and preservation. The final plan was completed in late Autumn 2009.
