Design worked with a multidisciplinary team to develop design and construction
documents for a Visitor Center for the Little Rock Central High School National
Historic Site. One of the primary driving forces behind the landscape
design is the desire to harmonize with the surrounding residential neighborhood.
The idea is to blend the Visitor Center with the neighborhood while designating
it as a special site.
The project site is located on a block adjacent to the High School and will
feature primarily native, drought tolerant varieties that tend to require
less maintenance. Water will be applied with an efficient irrigation system.
This system will provide water during the establishment period and then either
turned off or retained for severe drought conditions.
The neighborhood surrounding the new Central High School Visitor Center is registered as a National Historic District. The new use will be significantly different from uses at the time of the important historical events; however, the landscape around the new Visitor Center respects the history and style of the neighborhood through the use of appropriate plant and hardscape materials, and appropriate scale and layout.
