Ogden Downtown Neighborhood Study

Landmark Design was hired by Ogden City to help link various housing projects throughout four downtown neighborhoods. The goal of the project was to involve neighborhood residents in the identification of public works programs that would benefit each neighborhood while signaling to the community at large that the downtown neighborhoods are places 'on the move.'

The study proposed immediate measures to make the neighborhoods brighter nighttime places, and in the process make them safer and more attractive. Implementation of a unique "Porch Light Program" recommended in the plan has been resoundingly successful, bringing awards to the City and placing Ogden in the national spotlight in the process. The study also proposed long-term enhancement measures such as the development of 'urban trail' corridors, establishment of temporary downtown sites for special activities, the beautification of downtown streets, and the promotion of neighborhood events and festivals. The plan was adopted by the Ogden City Council in February 1999.

Landmark Design facilitated four neighborhood charettes attended by approximately 30 individuals each. Participants included a broad variety of downtown residents, city staff, politicians and interest groups. Comments were recorded on large tablets, ranked for preference and developed into specific actions or recommendations. The ideas were later formulated into coordinated improvement proposals, which were presented to the public through an informative traveling exhibit that was displayed at two shopping malls and the city library.
