Landmark Design worked with Brixen & Christopher Architects in the development of the new campus for preschool and elementary school children located on Guardsman Way in Salt Lake City. In the course of creating individual educational play spaces for various age levels, we met with teachers and administrators, and observed children playing on the grounds of their current, constrained campus. What we heard and learned taught us about the scale of spaces that children seek out and the need for flexibility and simplicity in design.
The design includes "trike tracks" with bumps and ridges and curves, raised platforms and small geometric-shaped concrete pads for "performing" and gathering, woodsy glens with rocks and trees, raised planters filled with soil for growing flowers and vegetables, deep sand for digging, water for making mud, big surfaces of paving and lawn for playing games, and lots of traditional fields and structures. The school was completed in 2003 in is currently occupied.
