Landmark Design was hired by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation on to complete a master plan for the Muir-Poulsen Homestead in Dimple Dell Regional Park. As an early pioneer site, the homestead has historical significance for the Granite community. The site originally contained the farmhouse, constructed from granite block from Little Cottonwood Canyon, a sizeable orchard, farm pond, barn and supporting structures, and irrigation on canals. Today, while many of the structures are gone, the farmhouse, some historic fruit trees, and other historical artifacts facts remain.
Through the master planning process, Landmark Design took inventory of historic and cultural resources on the property and developed a master plan concept to restore and repurpose the site as a working community farm and outdoor classroom, highlighting the story of early sellers to the area. The plan includes a renovation of the farmhouse as a community museum for local artifacts, preservation of historic trees and a restoration of the orchard for community programming, outdoor classroom areas, and a series of interpretive trails to highlight the cultural and historic significance of the site. Doubling as a major trailhead within Dimple Dell Regional Park, the farmstead plan also integrates with a large trail network, providing restroom and parking amenities. In a parallel effort, Landmark managed architectural input to produce design and engineering drawings for a first phase remodel of the farmhouse. This included an analysis of the existing structure and plans for seismic retrofit and waterproofing. The master plan and retrofit drawings were completed in 2022. |
